Neurological paraneoplastic syndromes: useful aspects for the neurosurgeon
##plugins.themes.bootstrap3.article.main##
Abstract
Background: Neurological paraneoplastic syndromes are remote manifestations of extraneurological cancer mediated by the immune system. Despite being infrequent, it is very important to take them into account when diagnosing neurological syndromes, because timely detection and treatment can significantly improve the quality of life of patients. Material and Methods: A review of the papers related to the topic published in the last 10 years was carried out on the Medline / Pubmed, Imbiomed and SciELO platforms. Conclusions: Four general pillars support the diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurological syndromes: clinical suspicion, exclusion of other causes of the neurological syndrome, determination of paraneoplastic antibodies and search for the responsible cancer. The three principles for its treatment are: support therapies, responsible cancer control and immunotherapy.
