Imaging assessment of calcifying and ossifying pathology of the cervico-dorsal spine
##plugins.themes.bootstrap3.article.main##
Abstract
The increase in the availability of imaging studies has made it possible to evaluate a greater number of patients consulting for cervical-dorsalgia. This has resulted in an increase in the diagnosis of spinal calcifying and ossifying pathologies. In this article, we review the characteristic imaging findings of various disorders within this spectrum, such as ankylosing spondylitis, calcific discitis, calcifying tendinopathy of the longus colli, calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, crowned dens syndrome, and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. Awareness of these pathologies is relevant to make an adequate differential diagnosis, distinguishing them from other inflammatory-infectious, degenerative, and tumor pathologies that may have similar clinical presentations and imaging findings, in order to avoid misdiagnoses and unnecessary invasive procedures.
