Abstract

It is known as discogenic lumbar pain to that pain that is originated from an intervertebral disc at this level of the spine. Between 80-90% of people have experienced low back pain at some point in their life and 40% of these are originated in the intervertebral disc. It represents a reason for frequent consultation and is one of the main causes of work absenteeism, generating high costs for health systems, not only for the direct physical damage but also for the deterioration in the quality of life of the patients and the more frequent in them of disorders such as major depression and anxiety. Disc degeneration has been related to various genetic, environmental, mechanical and metabolic factors. Smoking has been recognized as a determining factor, as well as age, physical activity associated with the practice of some sports and heavy work developed without the necessary measures. We present a practical review of the literature.
